Ballot Status History – Green Party of Michigan

2000: The Green Party of Michigan qualified for statewide ballot status in May 2000.

In Michigan, the criteria to qualify for statewide ballot status is a number of petition signers equal to 1% of the total of all votes for all candidates for governor in the previous  general election.

In 2000, the total number of petition signers needed was 30,272. Organizers from the Green Party of Michigan and the Ralph Nader/Winona LaDuke presidential/vice-presidential campaign submitted enough signatures such that as of the July 19 deadline,  a sufficient number were deemed valid by state elections officials to reach the threshold for the Green Party of Michigan to qualify for November 2000 statewide ballot status.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status was a number of votes in a top-of-the ticket statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2000, that number of votes was was 20,555.

In November 2000 elections, Ralph Nader / Winona La Duke ran for President/Vice President nationwide, receiving 84,165 votes (1.99%), sufficient to retain ballot status.


2002: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2002.

In 2001, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status was changed via House Bill 5237  from a number of votes received by a top-of-the-ticket candidate, equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State , to  the same number of votes by a candidate in any statewide race.  The process of how that change occurred, is described in this document PA399 and the Michigan Legislation Factory, written by a Michigan Libertarian Party member.

Therefore in 2002 in Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2002, that number of votes was 17,003.

In November 2002 elections, Susan Fawcett ran for University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 120,769 votes (2.22%); Jason LaFay ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 62,225 votes (1.14%); Matt Petering ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 60,314 votes (1.11%); Frederick Kline ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governor, receiving 57,184 votes (1.07%); Karen Shelley ran for  State Board of Education, receiving  56,100 votes (1.00%); Surjit Dulai ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 54,807 votes (1.01%); Kyle Moxley ran for State Board of Education, receiving 43,834 votes (0.78%); Jerry Kaufman ran for  Attorney General, receiving 47,894 votes (1.56%); Ray Ziarno ran for Secretary of State, receiving 38,251 votes (1.23%); Douglas Campbell / Adrianna Buonarroti ran for  Governor/Lt Governor, receiving  25,236 votes (0.79%); and Eric Borregard ran for  US Senator, receiving 23,931 votes (0.76%). All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2004: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2004.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State.  In 2004, that number of votes was 17,003.

In November 2004 elections, Peter Ponzetti III ran for State Board of Education, receiving 85,557 votes (1.03%); Margaret Guttshall ran for  Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 81,918 votes (1.03%); Benjamin Burgis ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 74,794 votes (0.92%); and Nathaniel Damren ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 74,524 votes (0.91%).  All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2006: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2006.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2006, that number of votes was 20,899.

In November 2006 elections, Lauren Spencer ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 112,779 votes (1.75%); Margaret Guttshall  ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 91,470 votes (1.43%); Kevin Carey ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 73,564 votes (1.11%); Michael Merriweather ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 70,874 votes (1.11%); Edward Morin ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 70,669 votes (1.09%); Lynn Meadows ran for  Secretary of State, receiving 69,956 votes (1.88%); Jacob Woods ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 60,624 votes (0.92%); and David Sole ran for US Senator, receiving 23,925 votes (0.63%). All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2008: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November2008.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In  2008, that number of votes was 20,899.

In November 2008 elections, Margaret Guttshall ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 139,730 votes (1.73%); Therese Storm ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 114,150 votes (1.37%); Ellis Boal ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 101,942 votes (1.23%); and Dwain Reynolds III ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 94,663 votes (1.12%). All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2010: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2010.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2010, that  number of votes was 16,129.

In November 2010 elections, Diana Demers ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 80,365 votes (1.41%); Mary T. Wood ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 78,586 votes (1.35%); Libby Hunter ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 66,521 votes (1.17%); Surjit Singh Dulai ran for Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 51,302 votes (0.90%); Margaret Guttshall ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors , receiving 50,739 votes (0.91%); James Arnoldi ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 46,757 votes (0.84%); Latham Redding ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 40,967 votes (0.71%); John Anthony La Pietra ran for  Secretary of State, receiving  30,411 votes (0.96%); and Harley Mikkelson / Lynn Meadows ran for  Governor/Lt Governor, receiving 20,699 votes (0.64%).  All were sufficient to retain ballot status.

In November 2012 elections, Margaret Guttshall ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 103,382 votes (1.33%); Candace R. Caveny ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 107,045 votes (1.32%); Lloyd Clarke ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 101,375 votes (1.28%); Eric Borregard ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 81,242 votes (1.01%); Latham Redding ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 70,517 votes (0.91%); Dwain Reynolds III ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 66,021 votes (0.81%); Harley Mikkelson ran for US Senator statewide, receiving 27,854 votes (0.60%); and Jill Stein / Cheri Honkala ran for  President/Vice President, receiving 21,831 votes (0.46%).  All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2014: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2014.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2014, that number of votes was 16,491.

In November 2014 elections, Sherry A. Wells ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 60,516 (1.0819%); Terry Link ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 59,718 votes (1.09%); Ian Swanson ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 58,059 votes (1.06%); Margaret Guttshall ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 44,974 (0.8407%); Latham Redding ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 37,134 votes (0.69%); Adam Adrianson ran for  MSU Board of Trustees statewide, receiving 33,914 votes (0.62%); Chris Wahmhoff ran for US Senator, receiving 26,137 (0.8372%) and John Anthony La Pietra ran for Attorney General , receiving  25,747 votes (0.8367%).  All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2016: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2016.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2016, that number of votes was 16,491.

In November 2016 elections, Will Tyler White ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 126,125 votes (1.55%); Sherry A. Wells ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 124,124 votes (1.47%); Latham Redding ran for University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 99,462 votes (1.21%); Margaret Guttshall ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 96,055 votes (1.20%); Fran Shor ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 91,150 votes (1.14%); Derek M. Grigsby ran for State Board of Education, receiving 66,051 votes (0.78%); and Jill Stein / Ajamu Baraka ran for President/Vice President, receiving 51,463 votes (1.07%). All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2018: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2018.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2018, that number of votes was 22,133.

In November 2018 elections, Kevin A. Graves ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 72,160 votes (1.03%); Sherry A. Wells ran for State Board of Education, receiving 61,493 votes (0.85%); Aaron Mariasy ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 53,478 votes (0.77%); Marcia Squier ran for US Senate, receiving 40,204 votes (0.95%); and Jennifer V. Kurland / Charin Davenport ran for  Governor/Lt Governor, receiving 28,799 votes (0.68%). All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2020: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2020.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2020, that number of votes was 22,133.

In November 2020 elections, Susan Odgers ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 99,953 votes (1.03%); Robin Lea Laurain ran for Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 74,495votes (0.76%); Michael Mawilai ran for  University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 74,136 votes (0.75%);  Brandon Hu state ran for Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 66,409 votes (0.68%); Tom Mair ran for  State Board of Education, receiving 58,397 votes (0.58%); and Marcia Squier ran for  US Senate, receiving 39,217 votes (0.72%). All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2022: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2022

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2022, that number of votes was 24,679.

In November 2022 elections, Robin Lea Laurain ran for  Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 78,848 votes (0.99%); Sherry A. Wells ran for University of Michigan Board of Regents, receiving 77,858 votes (0.98%); and Susan Odgers ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 71,228 votes (0.91%); All were sufficient to retain ballot status.


2024: The Green Party of Michigan retained statewide ballot status in November 2024.

In Michigan, the criteria to retain statewide ballot status is a number of votes in any statewide race equal to 1% of the winning total for the previous race for Michigan Secretary of State. In 2024, that number of votes was 24,679.

In November 2024 elections, John Anthony La Pietra ran for Michigan State University Board of Trustees, receiving 100,669 votes (1.01%);  Sami Makhoul ran for Wayne State of University Board of Governors, receiving 80,047 votes (0.81%); Douglas P. Marsh ran for  US Senator, receiving 53,978 votes (0.97%); and Jill Stein / Rudolph Ware ran for  President/Vice President , receiving 44,607 votes (0.79%).  All were sufficient to retain ballot status.
