Ballot Status History – Missouri Green Party

In Missouri, the qualification criteria to maintain statewide ballot status is for a party to receive at least 2% of the vote for any statewide office in at least one of two consecutive general elections. Per RSMo 115.317, Ballot status lasts four years and is extended by four years with each election year that 2% is reached for a statewide office. Unrecognized new parties, per RSMo 115.315, must petition to obtain 10,000 signatures to qualify for the next general election.


1996: Ralph Nader received 0.0% and 534 votes (of 2,158,065) as a write-in candidate for president.


1998: No activity on Missouri ballot.


2000: The Missouri Green Party obtained ballot access, but failed to maintain access in November 2000. Ralph Nader received 1.6% and 38,515 votes for President. Missouri Green Party Candidates for U.S. Senate, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, and Treasurer received 1.1% or less and did not meet the 2% threshold to retain ballot access.


2002: Daniel (Digger) Romano received 0.6% and 10,465 votes for U.S. Senate and Fred Kennell received 1.3% and 23,521 votes for State Auditor.


2004: Ralph Nader received 0.0% and 1,294 votes (of 2,731,364) as a write-in candidate for president.


2006: No activity on Missouri ballots.


2008: Ralph Nader received 0.6% and 17,813 votes for President as an independent candidate (per RSMo 115.321).


2010: No activity on Missouri ballot.


2012: No activity on Missouri ballot.


2016: The Missouri Green Party established statewide ballot status in November 2016.

In November 2016 the Green Party obtained ballot access by petition. Jennifer Leach received 2.4% and 66,490 votes for lieutenant governor. This met the 2% of the statewide vote needed to extend the Missouri Green Party’s ballot status past November 2020. Green Party Candidates for President, U.S. Senate, Governor, and Treasurer did not meet the 2% threshold.


2018: The Missouri Green Party failed to extend statewide ballot status in November 2018.

Jo Crane received 0.5% and 12,706 votes for U.S.Senate. Don Fitz received 0.7% and 17,106 votes for state auditor. These failed to meet the 2% of the statewide vote needed to extend the Missouri Green Party’s ballot status past November 2020.

2020: The Missouri Green Party failed to maintain statewide ballot status in November 2020.

Kelley Dragoo received 1.0% and 28,183 votes for Lieutenant governor. Green candidates for President, Governor, Secretary of State, and Treasurer each received less that 1.0%.


2022: The Missouri Green Party failed to obtain statewide ballot status in November 2022.

The petition drive was not able to obtain the 10,000 signatures required to regain ballot access.


2024: The Missouri Green Party obtained, but failed to maintain statewide ballot status in November 2024.

The Missouri Green Party successfully petitioned to gain statewide ballot access in November 2024.

Danielle (Dani) Elliott  Received 1.999% and 58,260 votes for Lieutenant Governor. This was 8 votes short of the required 2%. Green candidates for President, U.S. Senate, Governor, Secretary of State, and Treasurer each received less than 1.25%
